FAQs
You have questions about our DNS Protection. We have answers.
What is DNS, and how does it work?
Introduced in 1985, the Domain Name System is at the heart of the Internet browsing experience — enabling users to easily find anything that is connected. Each entity on the network is assigned a string of numbers — eight under IPv4 — or, in IPv6, a series of numbers and letters. Invisible to users, each request to visit a site, device, etc., is switched from the typical ‘name@domainname.suffix’ to the assigned numerical or alphanumerical string, which is then verified by the receiving server before the connection is made.
How does DNS differ from an IP address?
The DNS is often compared to a phone directory, which contains the numbers or alphanumeric string — the IP address — assigned to each interconnected entity.
How does our DNS Security Advanced work to keep me safe?
Our DNS Security Advanced serves as your safe on-ramp protection to the internet. All internet requests are checked against global real-time risk scoring intelligence to proactively block access to malicious websites. Threats are stopped early in the kill chain, before they can impact your business. Good internet requests are processed as normal, while suspicious requests are blocked prior to any connection is made.
What are the benefits of using a custom DNS?
To use the tried-and-true ‘Internet = highway’ analogy, the standard DNS is akin to a regular four-lane highway. When traffic gets heavy, you can’t go quite as fast and, regardless of the volume of traffic, there’s always the possibility of an accident. Custom DNS is closer in nature to express lanes, where there’s added security and much less traffic to slow you down. Unlike public DNS, a custom DNS has an extra layer of security, keeping you clear of threats like DNS tunneling, domain generation algorithms, and more. Optimized performance and increased reliability should mean less disruption to your team’s workflows and no need to work around downtime.
What is DNS lookup?
The most common analogy for DNS is the traditional telephone book: a catalog of the numbers assigned to every device connected to the public Internet. In simplest terms, when you enter the domain name related to an assigned DNS number, the network attempts to establish a lane between you and that user. DNS records establish the paths for each address query to follow, based on the domain name you enter.
What’s the difference between VPN and smart DNS?
A virtual private network (VPN) creates an encrypted tunnel to a server you select, then forwards your connection request to the destination address — hiding, or ‘spoofing’ your actual address — and encrypting the content of your message(s). So-called smart DNS, or DNS filtering, doesn’t hide your IP address or encrypt your traffic, but reroutes your requests through a proxy server, providing a safe route. Easy to implement and more cost effective than VPN, DNS filtering is an essential component of business cybersecurity.
