What is SD-WAN?
Software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) is networking technology that uses the principles of software-defined networking (SDN) to manage and optimize the way that existing WANs perform. What is the difference between SD-WAN and MPLS?
Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) is a transport protocol that was developed in the mid-1990s to move data packets to a destination as quickly and efficiently as possible. It requires users to install physical MPLS circuits at each location where they need to facilitate data exchange.
The term SD-WAN was first used in 2014 to describe an evolution in connectivity from MPLS. Unlike MPLS, SD-WAN enables customers to prioritize critical traffic and take advantage of a variety of transport methods. Although it evolved from MPLS technology SD-WAN can be seen as a software abstraction of MPLS technology in that it is applicable to wider scenarios, adding secure, private connectivity that is agnostic to all kinds of links and providers and is cloud-aware. While MPLS handled failure scenarios with backup links, SD-WAN handles them with real-time traffic steering based on centralized policy.
