Automated asset discovery is one of the most essential capabilities for a security monitoring program. In fact, you can’t secure devices you don’t know exist. There are several deployment options for asset discovery in AlienVault USM. In the auto deploy dashboard, you can see we have the opportunity to enable passive and/or active scanning. We use built-in technologies, such as Nmap, WMI and OCS to provide rich, real-time information about the assets discovered on your network, including those that are connecting wirelessly. This results in a very in-depth understanding of the applications, services, and devices that are found in your environment, as well as if these devices are vulnerable or misconfigured. A quick look at a sample alert demonstrates how valuable this is in the context of an investigation. Rather than hunting down various pieces of information using disparate consoles and products, security analysts can use AlienVault USM as a single pane of glass for asset discovery, and ultimately comprehensive security management.
